The French weekly Charlie Hebdo sparked a wave of anger and discontent in France after publishing a cartoon that many considered offensive to the French national team coach Didier Deschamps, just a few days after the death of his mother, Ginette Deschamps.

The illustration showed Deschamps holding up an urn labeled "Mama," alongside the phrase "Didier Deschamps brings the cup home," referencing the famous song that accompanied France's 2018 World Cup victory. Deschamps had returned from the United States to France last week to attend his mother's funeral before rejoining the national team's camp.

During the press conference preceding the match against Sweden, Deschamps spoke about his personal ordeal, saying: "I went through very difficult days, I was shattered. I had to return home, and it was very tough, but it was better for my mental health." Although he refrained from commenting on the cartoon, team manager Bachir Nahar described what "Charlie Hebdo" published as "disgusting and unnecessarily harsh" on Instagram, while also affirming his support for freedom of expression.

The cartoons sparked widespread criticism from French political figures, including presidential candidate Karim Bouamrane, who considered them "a lack of respect and decency." Meanwhile, MP Antoine Leomond stated that "Didier Deschamps is not just a public figure, but a son in mourning." In contrast, the magazine did not issue any official statement and merely published a new cartoon with a satirical tone regarding the ongoing controversy.
