A Mistake Against Spain May Write the Final Chapter in Muslera's International Career

Saturday 27-06-2026
Coach Marcelo Bielsa decided to substitute the veteran goalkeeper Fernando Muslera at halftime during the Uruguay vs. Spain match in the 2026 World Cup, following the mistake that led to the Spanish goal scored by Alex Baena. Sergio Rochet came in as his replacement at the start of the second half.

Muslera, aged 40, faced criticism during Uruguay's campaign in the tournament after making significant mistakes in the matches against Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde. Today's error prompted Bielsa to make the rare decision to substitute a goalkeeper during halftime.

Muslera is considered one of the greatest goalkeepers in Uruguay's history, having played in over 130 international matches and participated in four previous World Cup editions. He was one of the heroes in his national team's victory in the 2011 Copa America.

With Uruguay's exit from the tournament after losing to Spain and Cape Verde's qualification, there is increasing speculation that this match might be Muslera's last appearance in his national team's jersey, thus ending an international career that spanned over 15 years.
