Graham Arnold Comments After Loss to France in World Cup

Tuesday 23-06-2026
Australian coach Graham Arnold commented on the defeat of the Lions of Mesopotamia by a clean three-goal margin against France in the second round of the 2026 World Cup in America, Canada, and Mexico. The match took place at midnight on Monday and experienced a long interruption due to weather conditions.

The Philadelphia stadium hosted the encounter which was decided by the Roosters with three goals by Mbappe and Dembele, putting the blue team at the top of Group Nine with six points ahead of the match between Norway and Senegal.

Regarding the extended break between halves, Arnold said: "I didn't have many options during the stoppage. I used the time to show extended clips from the first half to the players, to highlight the areas France exploited to harm us. But the most important thing was for the players to maintain their focus and calmness, then recharge their energy before returning to the field."

The coach spoke admirably about France's star: "Kylian Mbappe is a phenomenon, his speed is lethal and uncontrollable. That's why we chose to defend more than usual, because any space behind the defense with Mbappe means a certain disaster. Our players put in a great effort, but repeated mistakes cost us the match again. In the World Cup, we learn a new lesson with every match."

Arnold immediately shifted focus to the decisive encounter: "Everything now revolves around the match against Senegal in three days. With the system allowing the top 8 teams from third place to qualify, our chances are still alive. We believe in our ability to come back strong and make up for what we lost. We will fight with all we have against the Senegal team, one of the strongest teams in Africa and the world due to their consistent levels."
