Lyon Agrees to Sell Afonso Moreira to Bayer Leverkusen
French club Olympique Lyonnais has reached an agreement with German club Bayer Leverkusen for the transfer of Portuguese winger Afonso Moreira during the summer transfer window, in a significant financial deal according to the "Foot Mercato" website.
The deal was finalized between the two clubs last night, with the player set to transfer for 32 million euros, and the medical examination scheduled for the coming days.
Reports indicated that Moreira, who is 21 years old, will sign a long-term contract with Bayer Leverkusen extending until 2031, after spending just one season with Lyon in the French league.
The player joined Lyon in the summer of 2025 for just 2 million euros and succeeded in delivering an outstanding season during which he scored 8 goals and provided 11 assists in 37 matches across all competitions, significantly increasing his market value.
This decision comes in light of Olympique Lyon's need to achieve financial balance before the end of the transfer window, in order to comply with financial oversight requirements, which prompted the club to agree to sell the player despite his technical importance.
The reports also indicated that the French club will benefit from the sale deal by making significant profits, with 20% of the profits going to Sporting Lisbon according to a previous agreement between the parties.
