The Guardian newspaper revealed a list of players who scored the highest percentage of their national team's goals in a single World Cup edition, excluding teams that exited in the group stage or scored three goals or fewer throughout the tournament.

The English striker Gary Lineker topped the list, having scored six out of the seven goals England netted in the 1986 Mexico World Cup, with a percentage of 85.71%. This surpassed Northern Irishman Peter McParland, who scored five out of six goals for his team in the 1958 World Cup, with a percentage of 83.33%.

The list also included Chilean Marcelo Salas, Danish Jon Dahl Tomasson, Italian Christian Vieri, and Slovak Robert Vittek, each scoring four out of five goals for their national teams, achieving an 80% rate. Additionally, Peruvian Teofilo Cubillas appeared with a rate of 71.43%, and Italian Roberto Baggio with 62.5%.

According to the study conducted by Polish researcher Mirosław Skaczkowski, which covered all editions of the Men's World Cup, Lineker's achievement in the 1986 World Cup remains the highest in the tournament's history in terms of the percentage of goals scored by a single player from the total goals of his national team in a single edition.
