Unai Simón: We cannot be blamed, and this is what we lacked

Monday 15-06-2026
The Spanish national team goalkeeper Unai Simón appeared in press statements following the 0-0 draw against Cape Verde in the first round of the group stage of the 2026 World Cup.

The goalkeeper said in his interview: "We didn't start the match well, not as we wanted. They had two chances in the first half. We need to understand the defensive work the team did, as well as their strong desire to score."

He added: "The Cape Verde national team was deeply positioned in their area, with players possessing strong physical builds, and they launched counterattacks. In terms of effort, play, and the game plan, we cannot be blamed."

Regarding some teams relying on defensive formations: "That's how World Cup tournaments are. You might think it will be like the match we had against Costa Rica. But Cape Verde will be a strong opponent not to be underestimated. They were underestimated because of our offensive style. In the World Cup, there is a margin for error, and now we have to correct it."

He concluded: "The coach asks us to keep pressing. We lacked precision in front of the goal, and the game is different now. This team will reach its goal."
