Klopp Criticizes the Technical Level of the Mexico vs South Africa Match in the World Cup

Friday 12-06-2026
German Jürgen Klopp directed sharp criticisms at the technical level displayed by the national teams of Mexico and South Africa in the opening match of the 2026 World Cup, asserting that the match did not rise to the level of a tournament as significant as the World Cup.

The Mexican team succeeded in opening the tournament matches by defeating South Africa with two goals to nil, within the competitions of Group A of the 2026 World Cup.

The Spanish newspaper 'AS' reported that Klopp, who currently holds the position of Head of Football at the Red Bull Group, spoke during his appearance as an analyst on a German channel, expressing his dissatisfaction with the tactical performance of the two teams.

Klopp said: "The red card received by Montes sums up everything that happened in the match; on a tactical level, the confrontation was extremely poor, and neither team delivered a good performance."

He added: "The teams should have been more cohesive, the distances between the player engaging in the duel and his teammates were too large, which caused clear gaps to appear."

He continued: "It is illogical to be subjected to a counter-attack when you are playing with numerical superiority; the main problem was in the defensive line's positioning, which was extremely delayed, and this issue recurred throughout the match."

He concluded his remarks by saying: "The South African team did not exploit the mistakes made by the opponent, despite the large spaces that appeared in Mexico's defense."
