Diarra Reaches Settlement with FIFA and Belgian Federation in Historic Case

Former French midfielder Lassana Diarra has reached a settlement agreement with the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) and the Belgian Federation, following a lengthy legal dispute concerning player transfers and rights, which was considered 'pivotal' in changing the rules of the European football system.

The case dates back to 2014 when Diarra's transfer to the Belgian club Charleroi was canceled after his contract with Lokomotiv Moscow was terminated, prompting the player to demand compensation amounting to 65 million euros, arguing that the prevention of his transfer restricted his professional freedom.

Later, a significant ruling by the European Court of Justice deemed that some of the transfer rules adopted by FIFA were contrary to European Union law, which paved the way for a comprehensive review of the football transfer system and gave momentum to similar cases from other players.

Although FIFA confirmed reaching a final settlement without admitting liability or paying compensation, the case is considered one of the most prominent legal files that have impacted the future of transfer regulations, at a time when collective lawsuits against the international federation are expanding with the support of player associations in several countries.
