Robertson: After Diogo Jota's Death, We No Longer Care About Football

Friday 22-05-2026
The Scottish left-back Andy Robertson spoke about the state of shock and deep sadness within the Liverpool team following the death of their beloved teammate Diogo Jota, affirming that the team went through a period where the loss of passion for football was evident.

The player stated, "I hope no one goes through what we went through, because the destruction we experienced is beyond words... Football meant nothing at that time."

He added: "We didn't care about football for several weeks. None of us wanted to train, that's the plain truth. You would go to the physiotherapy room to receive treatment from the specialists, but even the specialists themselves didn't have the desire to work or treat you. This was the reality we lived."

He continued: "As football players, we naturally have a duty to fulfill. We had to move forward and continue, and we managed to handle the situation and somewhat overcome it. We started the season well in terms of numbers, even though it was a very emotionally charged time for us."

He continued: "The Bournemouth match (the season opener at Anfield) was incredibly emotional and impactful, especially with the entire 'Jota' family (Diogo Jota) present in the stadium. I think that after the 20th minute, everyone saw a sharp and real decline in our performance on the field, due to the enormous emotional and psychological impact the situation had on all of us."

He continued: "But after that, the season was marked by instability. We signed new players who we were all excited about, and I have no doubt that they will have an amazing career with Liverpool. But they are also still young."
