Special Exception Opens the Way for DR Congo to the World Cup
A U.S. State Department official confirmed that the Democratic Republic of the Congo national football team will be allowed to enter U.S. territory to participate in the 2026 World Cup, despite the new health restrictions imposed by Washington due to the Ebola outbreak in some Central African regions, primarily the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The United States had announced a day earlier the ban on entry for foreign travelers who visited Uganda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, or South Sudan in the last 21 days, as part of measures aimed at curbing the spread of the virus. However, the American official clarified that the Congolese team would be among the special exceptions, especially since it is preparing for the tournament through training camps in Europe, not within its own country.
According to the same source, even if there are players who have recently entered Congolese territory, they will be allowed to enter the United States provided they adhere to strict health protocols, including medical examinations and isolation when necessary, to ensure the minimization of any potential health risks.
In contrast, these exceptions will not include Congolese fans, who will remain subject to travel restrictions, meaning their attendance at American stadiums during the World Cup will be difficult under the current measures.
