Officially: Lens to the Champions League and Nantes to the Second Division
Saturday 09-05-2026
Lens officially secured their spot in the next edition of the UEFA Champions League after defeating Nantes 1-0 in the 33rd round of the French league. The night was marked by the emergence of young talent Meziane Mesloub, who stole the spotlight with a stunning goal just five seconds after entering the pitch.

The match held at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis began with great caution from both sides, especially with the tactical changes made by coaches Pierre Sag and Vahid Halilhodžić, as Nantes appeared with an unusual three-man defense. The first half lacked real opportunities, while the pace improved after the break with dangerous attempts from both sides, most notably Johan Lepenant's chance, which goalkeeper Robin Risser brilliantly saved.

Lens thought they had opened the scoring twice through Wesley Saïd and Abdallah Sima, but the referee disallowed both goals due to offside and handball. Meanwhile, Mathis Abline missed an unbelievable chance after going one-on-one with the goalkeeper and hitting the crossbar, despite his teammate Ignatius Ganago being unmarked, turning the moment into a symbol of Nantes' collapse this season.

In the 79th minute, 16-year-old Misloub wrote his name in the history of the French league by scoring just five seconds after coming on as a substitute, granting Lens a Champions League spot and officially confirming Nantes' relegation to the second division for the first time since the 2012-2013 season. He also became the scorer of the fastest goal by a substitute in the history of the French league since Opta statistics began in 2006, surpassing the record of Polish player Ireneusz Jeleń.
