Infantino Decides on Iran's Position in the World Cup
FIFA President Gianni Infantino confirmed that the Iranian national team will participate in the 2026 World Cup, emphasizing that participation in the tournament is a right earned after qualification.
Infantino's statements came in an interview with the American network CNBC, on the sidelines of the "Invest in America" forum, where he explained that the participation of the Iranian national team is important for its people and players.
Infantino said, "Certainly Iran will participate, they have already qualified, and the players want to play," adding that sports should remain free from any political considerations.
He pointed out that football is a means of building bridges between nations, emphasizing that the International Federation is working to maintain this role.
On the other hand, U.S. President Donald Trump expressed his reservations about Iran's participation in the tournament, considering that it might not be appropriate under the current circumstances.
Iran also requested to move its group stage matches from the United States to Mexico, but the International Federation rejected the request, according to Mexican officials.
