Rabat Court of Appeal Upholds Verdicts for Fans of Africa Cup Final
Tuesday 14-04-2026
The Rabat Court of Appeal upheld the initial sentences issued against several fans involved in the riots that accompanied the final of the "Morocco 2025" African Cup of Nations between the Moroccan and Senegalese teams.

The decision came during a lengthy session that lasted for hours, with several interruptions, including a temporary halt after a Senegalese fan suffered a health issue. He was taken to the court clinic and returned to continue the session after his condition improved.

The session witnessed intense legal pleadings from the defense teams of the accused, including Senegalese fans and a defendant with French nationality of Algerian origin, along with pleadings from civil rights representatives, in addition to interventions by the public prosecution regarding several submitted requests.

The defense for the defendants requested to summon the President of the African Football Confederation and to allow the presentation of video recordings of the incident. However, the public prosecutor's representative sought to reject these requests, considering that the events are documented and known within the stadium, and there is no need for additional procedures.

According to the issued ruling, three Senegalese fans and one French fan are expected to complete their three-month prison sentences by April 18th of this year, while 15 other fans continue to serve their remaining sentences.

The primary court had previously issued varying sentences, including three months of effective imprisonment in some cases, six months in others, and up to a full year, in addition to various financial fines.

The case pertains to accusations involving acts of violence inside the stadium, assaulting security personnel, damaging sports equipment, as well as throwing hard objects during the match, which are the incidents upon which the court based its decisions in both stages of litigation.
