Spanish Prime Minister Condemns Anti-Islam Chants at Spain-Egypt Match
Wednesday 01-04-2026
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed his strong condemnation of the racist and anti-Islamic chants witnessed during the friendly match between the Spanish and Egyptian national teams, which took place at the "Cornellà" stadium in Barcelona.

In an official statement, Sanchez described these events as "unacceptable" and completely contrary to the values and principles on which the Spanish state is founded, emphasizing the need to take firm actions to ensure such scenes are not repeated in sports stadiums in the future.

A group of fans in the stands chanted Islamophobic slogans such as "Whoever doesn't jump is a Muslim," in addition to booing during the playing of the Egyptian national anthem.

These chants sparked widespread anger, especially from the young Spanish star Lamine Yamal (of Muslim faith), who expressed his strong discontent, describing such actions as "ignorance and racism."
