Yamal Responds to Racism Incident with Official Statement
Spanish star Lamine Yamal responded to a racism incident during the Spanish national team's match against its Egyptian counterpart, last night, at the Stage Front stadium, in a match that ended 0-0.
In his statement, Yamal said: "I am a Muslim, praise be to God."
He added: "Yesterday, chants were heard in the stadium saying: 'Whoever does not jump is a Muslim.' I know it was directed at the opposing team and not personally at me, but as a Muslim, this is disrespectful and intolerable."
He continued: "I understand that not all fans are like this... But for those who sing these things: using religion as a joke in the stadium makes you appear ignorant and racist."
He emphasized: "Football is for enjoyment and cheering, not for insulting people because of their identity or beliefs."
He concluded: "Nevertheless, thank you to the people who came to support us, see you at the World Cup."
