Senegalese Federation Refuses to Return Africa Cup Title and Escalates to 'CAS'
In a new development regarding the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final, Seydou Diagne, a representative of Senegal's legal team, confirmed that his country does not intend to return the title to Morocco. He noted that the decision of the CAF Appeals Committee does not explicitly include withdrawing the trophy or reclaiming the medals.
During a press conference in Paris, Diani explained that the appeal submitted to the Court of Arbitration for Sport is not limited to the details of the decision but is based on a legal principle concerning the possibility of amending a final decision by a disciplinary body, considering this to be in conflict with CAF regulations.
He added that the Senegalese federation does not see itself legally obliged to return the title, arguing that the decision was communicated without its rationale, which makes it, according to him, unenforceable under the applicable laws.
In a notable escalation, the lawyer revealed an intention to file a complaint concerning suspicions of corruption against five individuals, without disclosing their identities, affirming that the move aims to initiate an international investigation, while emphasizing that the accusations do not directly target Morocco.
He also pointed out that the versions of the decision available to the Senegalese defense, in both English and French, do not mention the withdrawal of the title or the demand for its return, which the Senegalese side is holding onto in its current stance.
On the other hand, this proposal contradicts the ruling of the Appeals Committee, which considered the Senegalese team as withdrawn and losing by three goals to nil, thereby strengthening Morocco's position in this dispute, pending the outcome of the next phase of proceedings before the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
