Kepa Under Scrutiny After Fatal Error Gifts Manchester City the Carabao Cup
Sunday 22-03-2026
The reactions of Spanish goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga after the end of the Carabao Cup final reflected the extent of disappointment he experienced following a grave mistake that cost Arsenal the title, losing to Manchester City 2-0.

The first goal came as a direct result of Kepa's mistake in judging a cross during the second half, allowing Niko O'Reilly to score the first goal. The same player added the second goal four minutes later, securing the match for Manchester City and clinching their first title of the season.

At the final whistle, other goalkeepers approached to console Kepa, including David Raya on Arsenal's bench, James Trafford with City, and Gianluigi Donnarumma.

This error comes after a series of defeats in the Carabao Cup finals, where Kepa previously lost on penalties with Chelsea against Manchester City in 2019 and against Liverpool in 2022.

Kepa transferred to Arsenal last summer, but he played a backup role, with coach Mikel Arteta relying on David Raya as the first choice in most matches.

Jamie Redknapp criticized Arsenal's decision to stick with Kepa in a final match, considering that the goalkeeper is not at Raya's level, and that the mistake was enough to cost the team the title, even though Trafford managed to handle many balls afterward without facing a difficult challenge.

With this loss, Arsenal records its fourth consecutive defeat in the Carabao Cup final, having also lost to Manchester City in the 2018 edition, leaving the team's dream of winning the championship postponed once again.
