Barcelona Gives Christensen a Final Warning Regarding Contract Renewal
The Spanish newspaper 'Marca' revealed that FC Barcelona has given its Danish defender Andreas Christensen a final deadline to decide on renewing his contract with the team, confirming that the management will not modify the offer presented to the player, awaiting a final response in the near future.
According to what was reported by Marca, Barcelona's move came after confirming Joan Laporta's continuation as the club's president, as the sporting director Deco and coach Hans Flick continue to work on the team's roster planning for the next season, among the issues discussed is Christensen's future, whose contract expires on June 30.
The report added that Barcelona decided to offer the Danish defender a contract renewal despite the injury he suffered, which will keep him off the field until the end of the season, a step the club considered an appreciation gesture for the player, especially since negotiations with his agent have continued for a while without reaching a final agreement so far.
The newspaper explained that the offer from Barcelona includes a two-year contract with several variables linked to the number of matches the player participates in, and Christensen will receive half of his current salary each season, with the possibility of increasing the amount according to his participation rate, as the contract includes additional bonuses if he participates in between 30 and 40 percent of the matches, and others if his participation reaches between 40 and 50 percent, in addition to a third bonus if it exceeds 50 percent.
The offer also includes a clause to increase the player's salary by more than 50 percent if he participates in more than half of the team's matches during the season, while the club has set penalty clauses to protect its interests, as Barcelona can terminate the contract after the first season if the player does not reach 30 percent of the matches, with compensation less than his annual salary.
The report indicated that Barcelona's management sees the renewal offer as a positive step towards Christensen, especially since signing with a new club could be difficult after coming out of an injury, in addition to the club's appreciation for the player's professional conduct and the absence of any negative statements from him towards the management.
On the other hand, Barcelona seeks to reduce the risks associated with the Danish defender's absence from a large number of matches, as Christensen participated in only 23 out of 106 matches the team played during the current and past seasons, accounting for 21.7 percent, which prompted the club to include a penalty clause in case he does not reach 30 percent of the matches in a single season.
