Thursday 29-01-2026
The Disciplinary Committee of the African Football Confederation has issued sanctions on both the Senegalese Football Federation, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, and a number of players and officials due to the events that occurred during the 2025 African Cup of Nations final in Morocco.

The Senegalese national team was crowned the 2025 African Cup of Nations champion after defeating its Moroccan counterpart 1-0 in extra time.

The match witnessed unprecedented events when the referee awarded a penalty to the Moroccan team in the final moments of the match. This led to a temporary withdrawal by the Senegalese players amid significant objections from the Senegalese technical staff and players against the referee's decision. The match was then resumed, and Ibrahim Diaz missed the penalty in a very strange manner after goalkeeper Mendy saved it easily, resulting in a goalless draw in regular time. The match went into extra time, where Senegal scored the winning goal.

First: Sanctions imposed on the Senegalese Football Federation:

Suspension of the Senegalese national team coach, Pape Bouna Thiaw, for 5 official matches within CAF competitions due to unsportsmanlike behavior, with a fine of 100,000 USD.

Suspension of Senegalese players Elimane Cheikh Baroy Ndiaye and Ismail Sarr for two official matches each due to unsportsmanlike behavior towards the referee.

A fine of 300,000 USD for the Senegalese Federation due to the inappropriate behavior of its fans, which damaged the reputation of the match.

Another fine of 300,000 USD for the unsportsmanlike behavior of the federation's players and technical team, which also damaged the reputation of the match.

A fine of 15,000 USD for the misconduct of five players who received warnings during the match.

Second: Sanctions imposed on the Royal Moroccan Football Federation:

Suspension of Moroccan player Achraf Hakimi for two official matches, with one match suspended for a year from the date of the decision, due to unsportsmanlike behavior.

Suspension of Moroccan player Ismail Saibari for 3 official matches, with a fine of 100,000 USD.

A fine of 200,000 USD for the Moroccan Federation due to the inappropriate behavior of the ball boys on the field during the match.

A fine of 100,000 USD for the behavior of the Moroccan team's technical staff who invaded the VAR review area and disrupted the referee's work, violating the principles of fair play and integrity.

A fine of 15,000 USD for the use of laser devices by Moroccan fans during the match.

Third: CAF's decision regarding the Moroccan Federation's objection to the Senegalese Federation

The Disciplinary Committee rejected the Royal Moroccan Federation's objection regarding alleged violations by the Senegalese Federation of Articles 82 and 84 of the African Cup of Nations regulations related to the tournament's final.
