Lewandowski Nears Messi's Historic Record in the Champions League
Polish striker Robert Lewandowski is preparing to achieve a historic feat with Barcelona when his team faces Copenhagen this evening in the final round of the Champions League group stage.
According to the Spanish newspaper 'Mundo Deportivo,' Lewandowski has so far scored against 39 different teams in the Champions League, surpassing Cristiano Ronaldo's record of scoring against 38 teams. He is now just one goal away from equaling the record held by Lionel Messi, who has scored against 40 teams, achieved with both Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain.
The newspaper added that Lewandowski's recent goal against Slavia Prague made it his fifteenth consecutive season scoring in the continental tournament, where he is the third all-time top scorer with 106 goals in 139 matches, averaging 0.76 goals per game, the same average as Cristiano Ronaldo, while Messi surpasses them with an average of 0.79 goals per game.
Regarding his records with Barcelona in the Champions League, the newspaper explained that Lewandowski has raised his tally to 20 goals in 33 matches, becoming the sixth all-time top scorer for the club in the tournament, behind Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Rivaldo, Neymar, and Patrick Kluivert.
Despite losing his position as a starting player in some matches this season, the newspaper noted that the Polish striker has scored 11 goals in 24 matches across all competitions, averaging a goal every 112 minutes, confirming his continued strong performance even as he approaches his 38th year.
