Benfica President: Changing Mourinho is Out of the Question
Friday 23-01-2026
The president of the Portuguese club Benfica, Rui Costa, confirmed today, Friday, his continued confidence in coach José Mourinho despite the team's modest results this season, emphasizing that the idea of changing the coach at the current time is 'completely out of the question.'

This came during Costa's conversation with journalists in the capital, Lisbon, on the sidelines of attending sessions of a trial within the 'Saco Azul' operation, where he stated that Mourinho is an 'excellent coach and has proven his worth,' and that differences in results do not mean changing the technical plans.

Costa also explained that the team is going through a difficult period in terms of performance and results in the local league and the UEFA Champions League, but he stressed that the management 'has complete confidence in the technical staff and appreciates what they are doing.'

The club president said that the club will continue to work to win more matches and improve results, confirming that the focus will remain on the remaining competitions this season.

Mourinho took charge of Benfica in late September 2025 after the dismissal of former coach Bruno Lage, in a move aimed at changing the team's course this season.
