Official Move by the Algerian Federation Due to Refereeing Decisions in Nigeria Match
The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) announced the filing of an official complaint and called for an investigation regarding the refereeing decisions during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final match between the Algerian and Nigerian national teams.
The Algerian Football Federation published a statement today, Monday, on its official page, confirming that it has filed an official complaint with both the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA).
The statement clarified that the Algerian federation cannot ignore the refereeing decisions that took place during the match, which, according to it, raised widespread questions and a state of dissatisfaction. It considered that these decisions undermine the credibility of African refereeing and do not serve the image of African football at the international level.
The FAF added that it officially contacted both the CAF and FIFA, submitting a complaint accompanied by a request to open an investigation, with the aim of clarifying the circumstances surrounding the incident during the match and taking the necessary measures in accordance with the applicable laws and regulations.
The Algerian national team was eliminated from the Africa Cup of Nations in the quarterfinals after losing to Nigeria in a match officiated by Senegalese referee Issa Saye, which sparked widespread controversy over several refereeing decisions.
