List of Candidates to Succeed Amourim as Manchester United Coach
Wednesday 07-01-2026
TEAMtalk revealed that Manchester United's management has identified Oliver Glasner, Crystal Palace's coach, as their top choice to take over the leadership after the dismissal of Rúben Amorim, while other names remain on the candidate list.

Amorim's dismissal came after 14 months in his position, following tactical tensions and disagreements over the transfer market, in addition to his provocative statements after the team's 1-1 draw with Leeds United, in which he demanded full control over the management and criticized the club's recruitment team.

Sources explained that the last meeting between Amorim and football director Jason Wilcox saw escalating disagreements, especially regarding the 3-4-2-1 tactical system that Amorim insisted on adopting, which contributed to the decision to dismiss him before the Leeds match.

List of candidates to succeed Amorim as Manchester United coach:

Oliver Glasner: He is the leading candidate to take the head coach position; his contract with Crystal Palace ends this summer, and he has not extended it, making him available without financial compensation. Glasner's impressive record, including winning the FA Cup and stabilizing the team in the middle of the league table, has impressed Manchester United's management.

Andoni Iraola: Bournemouth's coach, known for his attacking style and high pressing, could be an available option to join in the summer.

Enzo Mariska: The former Italian Chelsea coach, with recent experience in the English league, has won titles such as the Europa League and the Club World Cup, and is highly regarded by Manchester United's management.

Gareth Southgate: Has been at home since leaving the England national team coaching position.

Xavi Hernandez: Left Barcelona in June 2024 without taking any new position.

Unai Emery: Aston Villa continues to achieve positive results under his leadership in the Premier League.

The appointment may include a secondary official such as Michael Carrick or Kieran McKenna to support the new head coach, although they are not considered the primary choice.

According to sources, Manchester United's management is expected to delay making a permanent appointment decision until the end of the season, while Darren Fletcher will take charge as interim manager during the transitional period, including the team's upcoming match against Burnley.
