Conte: We Delivered a Perfect Championship, and I Would Be Lying If I Said Otherwise
The Napoli coach appeared in a press statement following the 2-0 victory over Bologna in the Italian Super Cup final at the Ooredoo Park, leading Napoli to win the title for the third time in their history.
The coach said: "The players deserve congratulations for a perfect championship, whether against Milan or Bologna. They showed how much they wanted this title for the fans, and now we will celebrate a special birthday with a new trophy in the cabinet. This comes after winning the Scudetto and the Italian Super Cup, having overcome strong teams like Inter, Milan, and Bologna."
He added: "Winners are the ones who remain in history. Don't forget that Napoli lost the Super Cup final two years ago against Inter, and only a few remember that. We had an exceptional journey to win the Scudetto, and we overcame a great team like Milan in the semifinals. It was a wonderful journey, but in football, the only thing that matters is who wins."
He emphasized: "No one cares about being the runner-up, because I have lost many finals as a player and as a coach. No one remembers that I was a runner-up in the World Cup, or the European Championship final, or that I lost three Champions League finals. What they remember is that I won the Champions League and the Intercontinental Cup as a player."
He continued, "Losing in the final only strengthens your determination, and you try not to relive those painful moments again. It's painful because you know you had a good run, but you have to put the cherry on top of the cake."
He added, "I want to congratulate Bologna because they have now become champions of Italian football. They won the Coppa Italia, eliminated Inter in the semifinals, and were strong competitors this evening. Vincenzo Italiano, the players, and the club deserve praise for what they have achieved."
When asked whether Napoli has become the top force in Italy after winning two titles in the last three league seasons and the Super Cup, Conte responded: "No, I don’t feel I can say that at all. I would be lying if I said that. We won the title last season with a very limited squad, and we brought in many new players this summer, so we are not fully ready to dominate. If you look at the league table, we have to try to stay close to the Champions League spots for as long as possible because this will be a very tough year. Predicting the top four will be very complicated."
He continued, "Humbly, we must recognize that work is the only path to progress. I cannot say that we are ready to lead, because we are not close to that at all."
He pointed out: "If we look at the number of chances we created, we could have been more clinical. It was a great performance from the team by all measures. The first goal came from a moment of individual magic, but the rest of the opportunities resulted from preparation and analysis of how to trouble Bologna."
He explained: "Our mission as coaches is to increase the player's knowledge and make them stronger. I feel that everyone I have worked with has improved, whether in tactical understanding and movements or in mentality. Of course, you need quality to decide situations, but you also need an organized team that puts players in the right conditions to use that quality."
Regarding Rasmus Højlund, who delivered an outstanding performance in contrast to his disappointing period at Manchester United, Conte concluded: "They said that Rasmus didn't play at Manchester, and the same about McTominay, so why? Ask yourselves some questions. The coaching staff and I have work to do, and there is a reason we are here in the end."
