Spalletti Explains Reasons for Juventus' Defeat Against Napoli
Sunday 07-12-2025
Luciano Spalletti, the head coach of Juventus, admitted that his team was weak against Napoli, noting that poor ball control led to the loss of the match.

Spalletti said: "Napoli pressed from the start, and we were hesitant to move with the ball, losing it easily. We had to chase after them. They are in good form, and if you don't control the ball, they make you run all over the pitch with their strength and quality."

Spalletti added: "I decided to rely on Kenan Yildiz as the false striker due to Dusan Vlahovic's injury, leaving both Jonathan David and Loïs Openda on the bench. I felt that Yildiz and Conciso were capable of these roles since they pass the ball well. However, Locatelli sat a bit deeper and didn’t maintain his position in midfield, and the two forwards were not very mobile. We got stuck in the middle, didn’t pass the ball quickly, and failed to take advantage of the numerical superiority in midfield."

Spalletti continued: "I brought David on in the second half, and that partly improved our performance, but we are still struggling with the speed and quality of Napoli's counterattacks. After the equalizer, we regained control of the match, but our play was very predictable and obvious, and we didn't try to add anything extra. This requires quick improvement; otherwise, things will become difficult."

Spalletti explained the defensive performance: "The problem has persisted since the time of Tudor, as the team struggles with crosses to the far post. Napoli created spaces and we fell into the trap every time. We needed to improve communication, and we made it easier for them to deliver the crosses."

Spalletti added about his return to the Maradona Stadium: "Of course, when the crowd sings these songs that I know by heart, the atmosphere is amazing, and it’s a feeling that only the Maradona Stadium can provide."
