Slot: I Did Not Expect This Question, and This Is the Team's Situation
Liverpool team coach Arne Slot appeared at a press conference to discuss tomorrow's match against Nottingham in the twelfth round of the English Premier League, to be held at Anfield Stadium.
The coach said: "The January transfer market? That's one of the questions I didn't expect. There are many matches before that. In the situation we are in now, it's the last thing on my mind. Maybe not for Richard Hughes (the sporting director), but for me, this matter is not even on the table at the moment."
He added: "We have three defensive midfielders, and perhaps Ryan (Gravenberch) and Wata (Endo) as well. You might not be aware of this yet, but we have other positions that could be a bigger problem."
Regarding the team's condition: "Both Virtz and Bradley are suffering from muscle injuries. I don't expect Conor Bradley to play in the next 22 days unless a miracle happens, which I don't anticipate. He might return near the end of the year. As for Florian Virtz, it depends on how his condition develops, but he is not expected to be out for a long time. Jeremy Frimpong will also be absent for two to three weeks, so it will be interesting to see who you want to see in the right-back position."
He added: "Andy Robertson has not trained yet, but he will be with us today. Alisson trained last week and this week, and he can play tomorrow if things go well. If he is ready, he will start. Unfortunately, we have some issues after the international break. Conor Bradley is unable to play, and Florian Wirtz is also unable to play. This is far from ideal."
Regarding the right-back options: "Dominic Szoboszlai delivers excellent performances in every position. He played very well both as a full-back and as a midfielder. Curtis Jones also played there last season. Joe Gomez can play in this position, but he has only played 90 minutes twice in 2025, and if we want to keep him available for longer, it's risky for him to play seven times in 22 days. He also missed yesterday's training, but we expect him to participate today. The situation is tough, but the good thing is that we have players good enough, and perhaps one or two will have to play in unfamiliar positions, and that's something we have to accept."
Regarding the match congestion and player readiness: "The variation in performance is not limited to new signings only; it also includes the veteran players. During the season, players are not always at the same level. The biggest challenge we have faced so far is the players' physical readiness and periods of absence during the preparation phase. As for Alexander Isak, we had hoped he would play more with Sweden, but he was just one yellow card away from suspension, which is why he did not play in the second match."
He emphasized, "As I said, we have injuries to Konor and Florian, Jeremy Frimpong is out of the team, and Giovanni Leonie as well. Currently, we have only five defenders ready for seven matches over 21 days, and I don't see any player returning before then. We knew that late signings make it difficult to maintain players' readiness and increase the pressure on those available."
Regarding Nottingham's playing style: "No coach is like another, but Nuno Espírito Santo's style is closer to Sean Dyche's than to Ange Postecoglou's. They are not exactly the same, but they are closer. The match is likely to be similar to the last game we played against a team led by Dyche, not Postecoglou."
Regarding the impact of Jota's death on the team: "It's good to always remember him whenever possible because of the person and player he was. It's impossible to measure the effect this has on the players or the results, and the last thing I would do is use it as an excuse. What I do know is that we miss the player 100%, and we also miss the person, but I cannot measure its impact on the results, and we will never use it as an excuse."
He concluded about Robertson's statements after qualifying for the World Cup and his remembrance of his late teammate Jota: "We are always held accountable, sometimes fairly and sometimes not. I watched Robertson's interview live, and I know this is a big issue for us, which is completely natural. But I always think: how do his family members feel? It's much harder for them. We definitely miss the player and the person. Last season, when we played against Nottingham, we were trailing 1-0, and it only took Jota a minute to score the equalizer. That shows how much we miss him."
