Kievo: Lautaro delivered a performance worthy of a true captain, and the substitution was agreed upon
The head coach of Inter Milan, Cristian Kievo, spoke after his team's hard-fought victory over Kairat Almaty with a score of 2-1, in the fourth round of the group stage of the UEFA Champions League, praising the performance of his players, especially captain Lautaro Martinez, while also confirming that he bears responsibility for some of the mistakes that appeared during the match.
The match saw Inter Milan leading with two goals to one, with Lautaro Martinez scoring the first goal in the 44th minute, while Carlos Augusto added the second goal in the 67th minute, and Ofri Arad scored Kairat Almaty's goal.
In his post-match statements, Kievo said: "I couldn't convey the right mentality to the players for a match like this, it should also be noted that we played the match just three days after another game, but that's not an excuse, we should have performed better, we secured three very important points, as there are no easy matches in the Champions League."
The Romanian coach added: "I have to work on finding the right motivations and words to raise the level of focus and mentality within the team, I take full responsibility for this, and I need to find more solutions than I have provided so far."
Kievo continued his remarks, explaining some tactical aspects, saying: "After the score became 2-1, we continued passing among the three defenders and then returning the ball to the goalkeeper, but I believe we should have played simpler, at one moment we became hasty and did things that were not appropriate at the time, yet I repeat that I bear responsibility for what I couldn't convey to the team today."
The Inter Milan coach concluded his remarks revealing the reason for substituting Lautaro Martinez, saying: "The substitution of Lautaro was agreed upon beforehand, and it was important for him to lead the team in the first half, he delivered a performance worthy of a true captain and also scored a goal, I decided to give him a rest because he has played almost all of the last six matches."
