Argentine star Lionel Messi expressed his desire to participate with his national team in the 2026 World Cup, confirming that he will make his final decision based on his physical condition over the next year, in an exclusive interview with NBC News.

Messi stated in his remarks: "It’s great to be in the World Cup, and I would definitely like that, but age will have an impact on my decision, as I will turn 39 next June."

He added: "I would like to be there, to be in good shape, and to be an important part of supporting the team. I will evaluate my situation day by day when I start the preparation period for the new season with Inter Miami, and I will see if I am able to be in top shape and be useful to the team, and then I will make my decision. Of course, I am excited because it’s the World Cup, and we hold the title, defending it on the field will be amazing, as playing with the national team in official tournaments is a lifelong dream."

Messi talked about his life in the United States after moving to Inter Miami, explaining: "I love everything here. I spent a long time in Barcelona, which is a wonderful city filled with beautiful memories that I miss a lot, but Miami is a city that gives us comfort and stability and allows my children to live their daily lives freely and happily."

It is noteworthy that Messi began his professional career in 2004 with Barcelona at the age of seventeen, before moving to Paris Saint-Germain in 2021, and then to Inter Miami two years later.

On the international level, Messi led the Argentine national team to win the 2022 World Cup in Qatar after defeating France in a penalty shootout 4-2, achieving the third title in his country's history, and winning the Ballon d'Or.

Messi concluded his remarks by talking about this achievement, saying: "It has been my lifelong dream to win the World Cup; that was the only thing I lacked in my career after achieving everything with Barcelona and on an individual level. I believe this is every player's dream in the world, to become a world champion."
