Marotta: San Siro Must Be Demolished and Rebuilt Like Wembley
Monday 22-09-2025
The president of Inter Milan, Marotta, confirmed that San Siro stadium is no longer able to meet the demands of modern football, indicating the necessity to demolish it and rebuild it like Wembley Stadium in England.

Marotta said: "Milan is one of the most attractive cities in Europe, and Inter and Milan represent two of its most prominent images, but there is a risk that the city will become marginal in football; it can no longer host the Champions League final and will not be among the host cities for Euro 2032."

He added: "San Siro must be respected as it represents the history of both clubs, but it has become an old structure that requires constant maintenance. Wembley was demolished and rebuilt, and we need the same thing here."

Marotta explained that Inter and Milan have reached an agreement to purchase the land of San Siro from the municipality of Milan, with a plan to demolish 91% of the historic stadium and build a new shared stadium with a capacity of approximately 71,000 spectators.

He continued: "We want to build a stadium near San Siro with private funding from both clubs; the project will provide significant benefits to the city in terms of infrastructure, jobs, and tourism. This capacity reflects the European average while respecting fans and ensuring reasonable ticket prices, in addition to enhancing modern facilities such as private boxes and commercial centers."

He also spoke about the financial gap with European clubs: "Milan and Inter earn about 80 million euros from the stadium, while some European clubs reach 300 million euros. This gap negatively affects competitiveness. In the last ten years, 153 stadiums have been built in Europe, while in Italy only three stadiums have been renovated, which is 1%."

Regarding the team's results this season, Marotta said: "We need to be patient, as we are still in a transitional phase; it is only the fourth round of the league, and there is a change in the coach, so it is natural for some difficulties to arise."
