David Moyes: Liverpool is a strong competitor, and we will strive to close the gap

David Moyes, Everton's manager, spoke about his team's upcoming match against Liverpool tomorrow, Saturday, at Anfield as part of the fifth round of the Premier League, confirming the difficulty of the match and its great importance.

Moyes said: "I think the gap between the two clubs during my first term was very small. We finished the season ahead of them on several occasions, but I must say that it was difficult because they are a very successful club in winning titles, and we had to cope with that and overcome our own issues. We are now in a much better position and we look like we are heading in the right direction as well."

Regarding the Merseyside derby, he added: "Any major derby in any big city is extremely important, a tough match always for me personally. We have faced different Liverpool teams that included great players over the years, and they have been a strong competitor, and we will do our utmost to win."

On the challenge posed by Liverpool in the league, Moyes said: "They have brought in many outstanding players, and over the past few years, Klopp's team has been fantastic, and they continue to perform excellently since his arrival. They are looking to improve, but we want to focus on ourselves and develop if we can."

Regarding how to deal with Liverpool's striker Alexander Isak, Moyes pointed out: "I can't focus solely on Liverpool's players; I will focus on my team's efforts to deliver a good performance. They have very talented players, and Isak is one of them."

Moyes added about handling late goals: "The better teams tire you out a bit and change your focus, and we have shown good defensive resilience and we seek to maintain it. It was similar to what happens with other teams in the last minutes, and Liverpool has a similar style."

As for Liverpool's spending in the market, he said: "You have to spend rightfully; you need to win and participate in major tournaments to earn money. Three years of being a significant brand in Europe allowed us to spend, so Liverpool is justified in their spending. I heard Klopp defending himself for bringing in many players; they spent on one player more than we spent on his entire team."

Moyes concluded his remarks about the gap between the two teams: "It’s about the realism of the situation of both clubs; we have to try to close the gap, but Liverpool is currently the champion and the favorite to win the title, while we are Everton and have come out of three or four tough seasons, so trying to close the gap is extremely difficult."
