Algerian Navy Kills Former Moroccan Player During Migration Attempt
In a new humanitarian tragedy within the series of illegal migration disasters, the young Moroccan Osama Hamham, a former player for the Al-Amal Sport Club in Al-Aroui, lost his life to gunfire from the Algerian coast guard after their boat was intercepted while trying to reach European shores via the Mediterranean.
According to available data, the boat set off from the beaches of Saidia, carrying several young men, before being intercepted by the Algerian navy near the maritime border, where shots were fired directly, resulting in Osama's immediate death.
A deep sense of sorrow engulfed the town of Al-Aroui, on the outskirts of Nador, as soon as the news spread, especially since the 21-year-old was known for his high morals and was widely loved in the local sports community.
The Al-Amal Sport Club in Al-Aroui mourned their former player in an official statement which read: "With great sadness and sorrow, we received the news of the death of our former player aboard the 'Phantom' from Saidia, after being intercepted by elements of the Algerian civil guard with gunfire."
Osama lost his father at a young age and dreamed of a better life, but his dream ended in death at the maritime border, turning his story into a new symbol of the victims of migration and the violent practices of Algeria.
