Jonathan Tah Approaches Decision on His Future
German defender Jonathan Tah announced that he is close to making a final decision regarding his future, as his contract with Bayer Leverkusen is set to expire on June 30, following a historic season in which the team won both the Bundesliga and the DFB-Pokal under Spanish coach Xabi Alonso, who recently announced his departure from the club.
Tah stated: "I will make my decision regarding my future soon; I do not want to set a specific date, but the truth is that my decision will not be delayed for two months."
Despite increasing reports linking him to a move to Spanish club Barcelona, the player confirmed: "I have no influence over the difficulties related to registering players there; I can only make my decisions, while the rest depends on other parties."
Tah hinted at his desire to experience playing outside the Bundesliga, saying: "When you go to a place where you may not speak the language, the experience becomes more challenging, and that is what makes playing abroad very attractive to me."
The international defender spoke about the rumors linking him to a move to Bayern Munich in the summer of 2024, saying: "It was a tough time; I felt like nothing else mattered. There was a lot of talk, yet I was still a player at Bayer Leverkusen. I spoke with Xabi Alonso and told him: I am here, training, and ready for the upcoming matches, don’t worry. He replied: I rely on you, and I know I can trust you."
Tah reflected on his development as a player mentally and technically over the past years, affirming: "I did not know what the situation would be like this season, but I was prepared. I do not see myself as a victim; rather, I face things as they are. At 23, it was harder to deal with these situations with the same focus."
He concluded his statements with a message of appreciation for coach Xabi Alonso, saying: "If I had to choose one coach who has influenced me, it would be him. I do not like to always be in my comfort zone; I prefer to develop and gain new experiences in a different environment. I believe I am capable of achieving more elsewhere."
