Club Rivalry Intensifies, FIFA Seeks Replacement for Club León
Saturday 22-03-2025
Spanish media reports have revealed intensive efforts from more than 10 clubs to communicate with FIFA, aiming to secure a spot in the 2025 Club World Cup, following the exclusion of Club León from Mexico due to ownership conflicts with Pachuca, which contradicts the tournament's regulations.

FIFA confirmed in an official statement that a replacement for Club León will be announced later, amid fierce competition among various clubs for the opportunity.

According to the Spanish newspaper "Marca," a significant number of clubs, mostly from Europe and La Liga, are seeking a legal loophole that would allow them to participate in the tournament to compensate for the absence of the Mexican team.

The newspaper noted that Costa Rican club Alajuelense is the frontrunner to fill the vacant spot, not only because it has appealed the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport but also due to its standing in the CONCACAF rankings, as FIFA prohibits the participation of more than two teams from the same country, making Alajuelense the most qualified option.

Club León was set to participate in Group D alongside Tunisian club Esperance, English club Chelsea, and Brazilian club Flamengo, and is now awaiting the official announcement of the team that will replace it in the anticipated tournament.
