Spalletti: We Don't Want Set Pieces to Become an Obsession
Friday 21-03-2025
Luciano Spalletti, the head coach of the Italian national team, stated that he does not want headers and set pieces to become an obsession for the team, despite the ongoing struggles of the Italian squad in this area, having conceded two goals from set pieces during the loss to Germany in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Nations League.

In his remarks after the match, Spalletti said: "At times, we did not have the right rhythm for the game, while Germany showed great consistency throughout the encounter."

He added: "We paid a heavy price for some mistakes, as they managed to find unmarked players inside the box, and they exploited that perfectly."

He continued: "We know that the Germans have the advantage in height, so I brought in Bellanova, but they are good at dealing with aerial balls; we have to congratulate them on their strong performance and work on improving these aspects in the future."

He went on: "Everyone knows we are facing difficulties in dealing with set pieces, but we cannot make this an obsession, otherwise it will turn into a psychological issue rather than a technical one."

Regarding the upcoming return match, he said: "We will go to Germany to play in our usual style, and we will see if I have assessed things correctly or not."

Spalletti concluded his statements by discussing the condition of Riccardo Calafiori, saying: "We do not yet know the severity of his injury, and we will wait for the results of the medical examinations."
