Postecoglou: Too Many Defeats, and I Won't Accept Tottenham Becoming a Submissive Team

Sunday 16-03-2025
Angie Postecoglou, the head coach of Tottenham Hotspur, spoke to the media following the 2-0 defeat against Fulham in the 29th round of the Premier League, expressing his frustration over the repeated defensive mistakes and their impact on the team's trajectory.

Postecoglou commented on the result: "We knew the match would be tight, especially at Craven Cottage. In the first half, we were defensively organized and didn’t give them any real chances, but we weren’t good on the ball. We started the second half positively and were the closer team to scoring, but we conceded an easy goal again, which gave them a strong boost, and from there the game slipped out of our hands."

Regarding the substitutions at halftime, he said: "I wanted more attacking effectiveness, so I decided to take off Brennan Johnson and Bissouma. We needed to be bolder in our possession, and that showed at the start of the second half, but when you concede easy goals, it makes things more difficult for yourself."

He continued: "I made several changes today because this is the schedule we will face after the international break. We can’t rely on just 11 players; everyone needs to be fully ready. But I made it clear to the players that I won’t allow their focus to be solely on the Europa League. We cannot let our Premier League season slip further. We have lost too many matches, and that is unacceptable."

He added: "I don’t want this team to get used to losing or to find it easy to accept it. We showed against Bournemouth that we have the ability to fight, and we won our last two away matches, but today we were in a good position for 75 minutes, yet we came away with nothing, which is disappointing."

He concluded: "I understand the fans' frustration; it is unacceptable to have 15 defeats in the league. Today, the opponent was not superior to us, and we could have achieved a better result. We have a problem allowing games to slip away from us due to conceding easy goals, and this has happened too often this season. We need to be stronger and take responsibility."
