The Competitions Committee of the Spanish Football Federation revealed the penalty imposed on Atletico Madrid due to the derby events against Real Madrid.

The derby match was held at the Metropolitano Stadium. It was temporarily suspended, due to racist insults against Real Madrid players, in addition to throwing projectiles at Thibaut Courtois.

The Spanish Federation’s Competitions Committee decided to partially close the lower south end. (Sectors 127 to 133) of the Metropolitano Stadium for 3 matches.

For its part, Atletico Madrid rejected this penalty, saying in its official statement: “We believe that the behavior is unacceptable from... The side of the few cannot lead to such excessive punishment towards a large majority that did not commit any mistake. The biggest loser from everything that happened is Atletico Madrid and its fans, and those responsible for this are those involved in throwing projectiles, and they are the ones who should be punished, not the rest of the fans.”

He concluded: “We see it as appropriate to appeal this penalty before the Appeals Committee.”
