Southgate: We have to find this, and understand how the fans feel
England national team coach Gareth Southgate appeared in press statements after the 1-1 draw against Denmark in the second round of the group stage of Euro 2024.
The coach said: “ Obviously this is not what we were hoping for, we are not using the ball well enough and we have to accept that if you do that you will suffer sometimes as happened tonight, we know there is another level we have to find.”
On whether he asks the team to retreat after scoring: “No. I think we have faced teams that are fluid in defense and it is not easy to pressure them but we have to do it better than what we have. In the last two games, not keeping the ball was another problem.”
He went on to explain why Trent Alexander-Arnold was replaced: “I wanted Conor Gallagher to be involved, we needed energy, and we needed Need to press better. Conor is doing it very well.”
He continued: “Arnold’s performance in midfield? He had some moments where he was what we thought he was He will do it. We know that it is an experience and we know that we do not have a natural replacement for Calvin Phillips. We are trying different things and at the moment we are not going the way we want.”
He continued: “Replacement. Ken? We needed energy. We had played two games in a short space of time and needed new energy to press. I think Harry has only played 90 minutes in over a month, so that was the decision we made.”
He concluded: “There is a huge amount of work to be done.” Do it, and this is clear from the two performances we made in these two tournaments, and we have to be strict. We understand that people will be disappointed with what we offer, and rightly so.”
