Monday 19-08-2024

The Barcelona midfield star officially announced, today, Monday, his retirement from international football with the German national team, at a time when doubts loom over his continuity with Barcelona.

Gundogan said: “To my dear German football, after a few weeks of reflection, I have come to the decision that it is time to end my career with the national team.”

He added: “I look with great pride.” To the 82 international matches I played for my country - a number I could not have dreamed of when I made my first appearance with the national team in 2011.

He added: “It was the most prominent moment for me.” It was a great honor for me to lead the national team as captain at the Euros hosted by our country last summer. After so many years, we finally succeeded in making the nation proud again – and I am so happy to have been a part of it.”

He noted: “But even before the Euro Championship, I felt some fatigue in my body, and also in my mind, which made me think about it. There were no fewer matches at the club or national team level.”

He stressed: “I will definitely remain a fan of this national team and I very much hope that the upward trend continues together - and there is nothing preventing us from being among the strong candidates for the title in the 2026 World Cup.”

He concluded: “We have a great coach, a really strong team and an excellent team spirit. Thank you to all the fans, staff, coaches and fellow players who accompanied me on this path. It has been an honor for me.” ! Thanks, Germany."
