Mohammad Fazal: I was not impressed by Al Ahly and Zamalek in the derby
Mohammad Fazal, the former star of Al Ahly FC, stated that he is not satisfied with the performances of Al Ahly FC and Zamalek SC in the recent Cairo derby in the Egyptian League, which ended with the Red Giants winning by two goals to nil.
Mohammad Fazal stated on the "Malab On" program that evaluating the strikers of Al Ahly FC and Zamalek SC poses a challenge for analysts due to the high expectations from players of the two clubs. He explained that the striker in both teams must be an exceptional player capable of making a difference, especially since the fans of Al Ahly FC and Zamalek SC always expect to see players performing at extraordinary levels.
A former Al Ahly FC player criticized the excessive tactical caution of Egyptian League coaches in derby matches, describing the performance of the two giants in some encounters as fear that restricts creativity.
He explained that contemporary football is based on a clear artistic identity and boldness in applying ideas and providing innovative solutions on the pitch, which is the feature that makes a real difference for any team, citing examples of coaches who have succeeded in leaving exceptional marks with their clubs thanks to their tactical courage.
Mohammad Fazal pointed out that the continuous reliance on defense and counter-attacks makes match analysis more difficult, given the repetition of technical methods and the lack of clear differences in playing style.
Mohammad Fazal emphasized the importance of having a clear playing identity for each club, explaining that the style of play must match the nature of the team and the players being signed. He stated that Barcelona, for example, is associated with a style of play that relies on possession and passing, which makes selecting the right players for this style essential, even if there is a player with great individual potential who does not fit the team's playing style.
He added that Al Ahly FC and Zamalek SC have different identities, as Al Ahly FC relies on possession and ball control, while Zamalek SC tends to widen the pitch and create spaces. He emphasized that understanding the club's identity should be fundamental in choosing the head coach and players.
