The punishment Mbappé faces if he unilaterally terminates his contract with Real Madrid
French star Kylian Mbappé could face sporting sanctions if he decides to unilaterally terminate his contract with Real Madrid before its expiry on June 30, 2029, according to 'Mundo Deportivo'.
Reports in France suggest Kylian Mbappé could leave Real Madrid at the end of the current season, which is his third with the team, despite his contract running for two more years.
If the player unilaterally terminates the contract, Real Madrid will have the right to claim full compensation for the damages resulting from the breach of agreement, according to the regulations on player status and transfers that come into effect on January 1, 2027.
Potential damages include the value of the player's services, loss of transfer fees or potential transfer value, costs of hiring a replacement, along with any other losses resulting from the contract termination.
The sporting penalty is related to what is known as the protected period, which extends to the first three years of the contract in the case of Kylian Mbappé, who is 27 years old. If the player terminates his contract during this period and Real Madrid files a complaint with FIFA, he could be banned from participating in official matches for four months, and the penalty could extend to six months in the presence of aggravating circumstances.
The punishment will begin as soon as the player is notified of the decision, but it will be suspended during the period between the last official match of the season and the first official match of the following season, including domestic cup competitions and international club tournaments. During the suspension, Mbappé can only participate with the France national team, and these penalties will not apply if the player and Real Madrid agree to mutually terminate the contract.
