From a surprise signing to a real test: Garnacho faces a big challenge

Aston Villa's decision to sign Argentine winger Alejandro Garnacho in the summer of 2026 has surprised many close followers of the club, including some members of the coaching staff themselves, according to Jacob Tanswell and William Toney in a report published by The Athletic.

The management considers the transfer an enticing market opportunity of the kind usually preferred by manager Unai Emery, who had sought to sign the player from Manchester United last summer before he moved to Chelsea.

In the early days of Villa's new era, Garnacho has remained out of the spotlight, with only 31 minutes of action spread across three Premier League matches as a substitute.

The encouraging performance in the recent friendlies against Southampton and Sevilla raises the question of whether the 22-year-old player is ready to prove his worth and justify Emery's insistence on keeping him in the Premier League.
