FC Barcelona have suffered another setback in their pursuit of Dutch player Kees Smit, who has renewed his contract with AZ Alkmaar until 2030. This move gives the Dutch club a stronger position against teams looking to secure his services.

Kees Smit, 20, is attracting significant interest from top European clubs, including FC Barcelona and Real Madrid. The royal club is among the most interested in the Alkmaar talent, having placed him on their list of players to monitor for future midfield reinforcement, in line with the club's strategy of attracting young talents.

Kees Smit has attracted attention in recent years for his ability to control the rhythm of play, advance the ball, and contribute to creating chances, to the extent that Ronald Koeman compared his style to that of Pedri, earning the player the nickname "Pedri of the Netherlands". His name has also previously appeared among the interests of several top European clubs.

Despite the fact that renewing his contract does not necessarily mean he will stay at Alkmaar until 2030, it will make his departure more difficult, as the club is now in a stronger negotiating position. Consequently, FC Barcelona and Real Madrid will need to make a strong offer to convince Alkmaar to part with their talent, especially since the Dutch club was not keen on selling him last summer.

Real Madrid continue to monitor the development of Kees Smit, who clearly aligns with the club's policy of signing young players capable of building the team's future. Therefore, the competition for "Pedri Netherlands" could turn into a new showdown between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona in the transfer market.
