Xavi explains reasons for choosing Zirkzee over Depay

Xavi, the new head coach of the Netherlands national team, confirmed that the call-up of Joshua Zirkzee to replace the injured Brian Brobbey was due to the Manchester United forward's suitability to his playing style and tactical philosophy, explaining his preference over Memphis Depay and Wout Weghorst.

Xavi said during the press conference before the match against Serbia: "Zirkzee has qualities that fit well with our system and philosophy. He is a good focal point and can be very important. I really like him as a player, and we talked about everything yesterday, and I believe he can offer us a lot."

Regarding his choice of Joshua Zirkzee instead of Memphis Depay or Wout Weghorst, the Spanish coach replied: "Yes, he can adapt better now. We choose based on that," emphasizing that the Netherlands striker must have the ability to connect with his teammates in addition to technical strength.

He added: "Our number 9 must have a good connection with the others and be technically strong. I really like that about Zirkzee. I believe he can help the team, and he has really good qualities."

Regarding the exclusion of Memphis Depay, Xavi confirmed that the Sport Club Corinthians Paulista forward is still among his future options, stating: "He knows. There will be a new list in November." The coach had previously described the decision not to call up Depay as one of his toughest decisions, emphasizing that the door to the national team is open to all players.

Joshua Zirkzee has been called up after Brobbey's injury during the Netherlands' 1-1 draw with Germany, giving the Manchester United forward, who has not started any Premier League matches this season, a chance to join the Dutch national team under Xavi.
