Gordon: We could have won easily, and I feel sad for that

Anthony Gordon, England's forward, expressed his disappointment following the loss to Spain by a score of 3-2 in the first round of the UEFA Nations League at Wembley Stadium.

Gordon said in statements to ITV Sport: "Not winning? I think it was a bit of a missed opportunity.. I think it was a great game to watch and to play in as well, and there was some top-level attacking play. But I think mistakes in games like this cost you a lot. You always feel like you are the one gifting the ball rather than the opponent taking it from you. And of course, you could say that applies to both teams, as they were both as good as each other. I just feel really sad about the mistakes."

Regarding the penalty missed by Harry Kane and whether England would have won had he scored it, he replied: "I think so. I think it would have put us in a great position to go on and score more. We were hungry for more. We came out to attack with full force and decisiveness, and we did that. Penalties happen. He usually doesn't miss them, so we'll forgive him this time."

Speaking about the goal he scored and whether it embodies the way England should play, Gordon said: "To some extent, if you want to phrase it that way, especially regarding what I said during the week about direct play and relying on the English style, being quick and putting opposing teams under pressure. The goal largely summed up what I said, and that was good, but in the end, it didn't lead to a win."

England forward Harry Kane added: "As I said two days ago, I don't think there is a gap between us and Spain. I feel we are very close to them. We could have won this match easily. If the penalty had gone in, we could have continued the game and achieved victory. It's always easy to say that after the match, but I felt comfortable during the game."

Gordon concluded his statements by saying: "I don't think there is a gap, and I believe that if we faced them in the final, I would feel confident. Confidence doesn't always translate to victory, but I think we showed here tonight that we are a top-class team."
