£1.15 billion: Manchester United sinks into debt

Manchester United have revealed an additional borrowing of £90 million since June 30, alongside confirming spending of £191.7 million on new signings during the summer transfer window.

Manchester United have signed André Santos from Chelsea on July 13, Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa on July 14, and Carlos Baleba from Brighton on August 25.

According to the figures announced by the club upon completing the three signings, the total value of the contracts reached £153 million, while it remains unclear where the additional amount was spent.

Manchester United has confirmed a new loan in a detailed financial disclosure submitted to the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday, one day after announcing the club's financial accounts for the year ending June 30, 2026.

Data has shown that Manchester United's total debt still exceeds the £1 billion mark, despite the significant cost-cutting measures implemented by Sir Jim Ratcliffe since he became a minority stakeholder in the club in 2024.

The club explained that it made three additional withdrawals from its revolving credit facility on July 29, July 31, and August 28, totaling £120 million, before repaying £30 million on September 21.

As a result, Manchester United's total debt has risen to approximately £1.15 billion, distributed between historical debts currently amounting to £578 million, £200 million due within revolving credit facilities, in addition to £375 million in outstanding transfer fees.

Despite this, the latest figure represents a decrease of £72 million compared to £447 million that the club had announced as transfer fees for the 2024-2025 season.

However, the value of the commitments related to the transfers remains significant, with £104.8 million due to be paid over a period of one to two years, while £51.9 million is due between two and five years, with the remaining portion to be settled within the next 12 months.

Manchester United has confirmed that payments for its recent signings are "due over the next five years", highlighting the financial commitments the club is undertaking alongside its significant spending in the transfer market.
