Iraqi coach criticises Arnold after disappointing draw against Oman

The Iraqi national team at the Gulf Cup 'Gulf 27' in Saudi Arabia features a distinguished group of young players who have been called up to participate, and Iraqi fans are hoping they will get their full opportunity just as previous generations did, who made history in the Gulf tournaments.

Iraq's national team showed two completely contrasting faces in the match against Oman. The first face was outstanding and remarkable in terms of passing, controlling the flow of the game, and imposing their style, especially in the first half, which was distinctly Iraqi. Meanwhile, the second face was different and saw a significant and concerning decline in the second half.

Iraqi coach Thaer Adnan stated in media remarks that the Iraqi national team did not perform to the expected level that Iraqi fans were hoping for after the disappointing display in the 2026 World Cup matches.

He added: "The Iraqi team suffered from a severe drop in fitness levels, and therefore they nearly lost all the points of the match against Oman, who woke up and showed strength in the second half."

He added: "The blame is not entirely on the players, as coach Graham Arnold made several tactical mistakes that ultimately led to Iraq's poor performance. Despite taking the lead at the start of the first half, the team was very close to losing points in the match. The coach needed to read the game better, and it is good that he came away with a draw and did not lose points in the end."

Thaer Adnan has criticized Australian coach Arnold's choices regarding player positions, stating: "Throughout Arnold's time with the Iraq national team, Mirkhass Doski has played as a left-back and Amir Al-Amari has played as a defensive midfielder. The match against Oman was the most important match as it qualifies Iraq for the next round, and I would like to understand on what basis Arnold decided to move Amir Al-Amari and Mirkhass from their usual positions."

He added: "Unfortunately, Iraq was unable to take advantage of the opportunity against Oman, as the Omani national team is undergoing a significant renewal and change. There are many players who are playing for the first time with the Omani national team, and among the lines that have seen major changes is the defense, where perhaps Amjad Al-Harthi is the only one remaining from the old starting lineup."

Thair Adnan concluded his remarks with clear concern about the future of young players, stating: "What happened with the Iraq national team in the match against Oman is very worrying, especially with the talented young players sitting on the bench and not being given any opportunity. Frankly, we are starting to fear that young players will not be given a chance in the national team, and coach Graham Arnold must treat all players fairly and give them full opportunities to prove themselves, because these are the future of Iraqi football."
