Robertson reveals the impact of Diogo Jota's death on Liverpool players

Andy Robertson, the former Liverpool defender, has revealed the profound impact that the death of his teammate Diogo Jota had on the players. He confirmed that the state of grief experienced by the members of the dressing room made it difficult for them to focus on football during the period following the departure of the Portuguese forward.

Andrew Robertson, speaking on the podcast "The Overlap", said: "It was horrific. When I think about the new players who joined the team, they came into a heartbroken club. They signed contracts for big amounts, yet it took months to adapt because we weren't caring about football. That was the truth."

Diogo Jota has tragically passed away in a car accident on July 3, 2025, at the age of 28, leaving a huge shock within Liverpool and Portuguese football. Andrew Robertson said: "We weren't thinking about football, because we just lost one of our best friends in the dressing room. I think we lost that determination. Sometimes we would think: what's the point of all this?".

The Scottish defender added: "We were looking at what his family was going through, and his children. For us, he was not just a football player, but he was our teammate and our friend and everything else."

Robertson spoke about the strong bond he shared with Jota, recalling that he attended the Portuguese player's wedding just days before his death, saying: "In the week leading up to his passing, I was at his wedding. Transitioning from one of the happiest days of his life to seeing his family completely devastated the following week was incredibly difficult."
