Mbappé on Bouaddi's choice for Morocco: Decision comes from the heart

Kylian Mbappé has returned to Clairefontaine to start a new phase with the French national team under Zinedine Zidane, but the captain of the 'Blues' faces a matter beyond football. Moroccan international Ayoub Bouaddi has made his choice to represent the 'Atlas Lions', while Ibrahim Mbaye has decided to defend the colours of the Senegalese national team.

In statements to RFI, Mbappé discussed the issue of dual nationality players from a personal and humanitarian perspective, emphasising that the decision to represent a national team should not be reduced to sporting calculations or the nature of the project each team offers.

Real Madrid star stated that the choice of international shirt is primarily linked to the player's story and their relationship with the country they belong to, explaining: "It's a personal matter, something very intimate. I think it's a profound decision that should come from within and from each person's life story. Everyone has a different relationship with the country they wish to represent."

Mbappé emphasized that emotions and belonging play a fundamental role in such decisions, adding: "When we talk about representing a country, we must talk about the love and history that connects us to that country, not just about a sporting project."

The French national team captain's comments come as discussions about the future of dual-nationality talents, particularly Ayoub Bouaddi, resurface. Bouaddi has chosen to represent Morocco, despite his football upbringing in France and his experience with various age groups of the French national teams.

Mbappé also touched on the situation of his younger brother Ethan, who may find himself facing a similar decision in the future regarding the national team he will represent, noting that each player's path and their relationship with the country they belong to remain crucial factors in the choice.

He clarified in this context: "Of course. When you are French, born in France, and you have spent all your development stages in the French national team, I think there is nothing more natural than that. That’s why I say it’s very personal."

Mbappé concluded his remarks by emphasizing that players' choices should be understood in light of their personal stories, backgrounds, and the connections they have with the countries they have the right to represent, stating: "Everyone acts according to their story, their background, and their connection to the country. When the decision comes from the heart, it is difficult to object to or comment on it."

Ayoub Bouaadi has decided to represent Morocco at the international level, while Mbappé's statements reflect a view that dual-nationality players' decisions are influenced by personal and emotional factors related to identity and belonging, not just sporting considerations.
