Risser misses out and Zidane calls up Como goalkeeper

Robin Risser, the goalkeeper for Lens, has had to withdraw from the French national team squad during the current international break after being called up by coach Zinedine Zidane to participate in the next four matches.

The French national team's coaching staff confirmed, after communicating with the medical staff of Lens, that Risser is suffering from an incomplete physical condition, leading to the decision not to include him in the squad for the training camp in Clairefontaine.

Instead, Zinedine Zidane has decided to call up Jean Butez, the goalkeeper from Como, in a surprising move, giving the 31-year-old the opportunity to join the French national team for the first time.

Jean Butez has limited European experience, having played this season with Como in a UEFA Champions League match against Leipzig, and he has also participated in five European matches with Royal Antwerp in Belgium during the 2023-2024 season. Butez, who progressed through the Lille academy, has been the first-choice goalkeeper for Como since the 2024-2025 season, but he has never played in Ligue 1.

Jean Butez will join the French national team camp in Clairefontaine starting Monday, preparing for four UEFA Nations League matches against Türkiye on September 25 in Kocaeli, Belgium on September 28 in Brussels, Italy on October 2 at the Stade de France, before facing Belgium again on October 5 at the Stade de France.
