Klopp begins Germany revolution with historic squad of 44 players

Jürgen Klopp has begun his tenure as head coach of Germany with a historic call-up, announcing a squad of 44 players ahead of four matches in the UEFA Nations League. The players are divided into two groups, with up to 16 players in line to make their international debut.

The squad witnessed many new names, including Hannes Burns, Max Rosenfelder, Philipp Troy, Yannick Engelhardt, Derry Sherhant, Younes Ibn Taleb, Finn Jeltisch, Felix Kaidel, Vitali Yanilet, and Mika Baur. In contrast, Klopp decided to exclude a number of well-known names, such as Deniz Ündav, Leroy Sané, Oliver Baumann, and Pascal Groß, in a move that reflects his desire to give opportunities to new faces within his project with the Germany national team.

The German coach is implementing an unprecedented rotation system during the international break, with some players leaving the national team camp after the second match, while players from the second group will join them for the remaining two matches.

The first group includes players who will face the Netherlands in Amsterdam on September 24 and Greece in Augsburg three days later, led by captain Joshua Kimmich, alongside Kai Havertz, Jamal Musiala, Nico Schlotterbeck, Serge Gnabry, and Lennart Karl.

The squad also sees the return of Marc-André ter Stegen to the Germany national team after a 15-month absence, and he is expected to take over goalkeeping duties during this phase, alongside Finn Dahmen, the Augsburg goalkeeper.

Klopp has confirmed that Jamal Musiala, Serge Gnabry, and Nico Schlotterbeck will remain in the national team camp after the first two matches to gradually regain match rhythm following recent physical issues that the players have faced.

The second group will enter the camp in preparation for the last two matches against Serbia in Munich on October 1, and then Greece in Thessaloniki on October 4. It includes prominent names such as Florian Wirtz, Said Malla, and Nick Woltemade.

This list comes as part of the changes Klopp aims to implement with the Germany national team following their exit from the FIFA World Cup, especially with the retirement of Manuel Neuer and Antonio Rüdiger from international play, while 15 players from the previous tournament's squad remain in the national team's considerations.
